Gymnogeophagus labiatus

Introduction: A species similar G. gymnogenys in body shape, but is easily distinguished from G. gymnogenys and other species of this genus by its very distinct "swollen" lips.

Scientific Name: Gymnogeophagus labiatus

Etymology: "Gymno" is the Greek word for "naked", referring to the lack of scales in the head region. Geophagus is derived from the Greek word "Gea" meaning "Earth", and the Greek word "Phagein" meaning "to eat". Labiatus is latin for "possessing lips", which is in reference to the very disctinct, large lips that this species sports.

Synonyms: Geophagus bucaphalus (Junior), Geophagus scymnophilus (Junior), Geophagus labiatus (senior).

Distribution: G. labiatus is found in southern Brazil as well as in Uruguay.

Physical Description: This species sport a body type similar to G. gymnogenys, as well as some similarities in color. As with many others species of this genus, large mature males develop a nuchal hump. This species can be distinguished by its rather unique characteristic lips, which are very large, with a swollen appearance.
